Description:

A very rare Edo period Japanese temple bell clock suspended within a purpose made lacquered case. The elegantly shaped bronze bell is decorated in high relief with crashing waves along the bottom and dragons amongst swirling clouds to either side. It has double winding holes, a small tear drop shaped opening near the top to activate the balance in case it stops, an internal lip around the inner edge of the opening, houses the movement and has a shaped hanger above. The whole hangs from a lacquered case with a slanted mirror in the base.
