Inv. #: | f251 |
Description: |
A rare late 19th century gilt-bronze and variegated red marble terrestrial globe clock with world time and annual calendar. |
Case: |
The shaped red variegated marble case has gilt-bronze feet, columns, bezels and is surmounted by the complicated globe mechanism above. |
Dial: |
The gilt bronze dial has Roman numerals for the hours, shaped steel-cut hands and a sunken subsidiary dial showing the days of the week. |
Globe: |
Mounted within the gilt-bronze frame above is the seven inch globe which is signed ‘Globe, Adopte, Par Le Conseil De L’Universite, Maison E. Bertaux, Paris, Rue Serpente, 25’ . It is driven by the movement below and is carried declined. The silvered engraved equatorial ring above has a small fixed sun and Roman numerals for the hours while below is a horizontally mounted silvered engraved annual calendar ring. Since this could be used as a teaching instrument provisions are made for both disengaging the clockwork from the mechanism above and for manually advancing the globe-work. |
Movement: |
The high quality eight day time and strike movement has a steel suspension, a pin-pallet escapement, is stamped ‘13125’ and ’55’ and carries two arbors that drive the mechanism above. |
Notes: |
The clock is designed to demonstrate the equation of time – the difference between mean time and solar time. The sun is represented by the gilt piece secured to the equatorial ring which also serves as a 24-hour world time dial. |
