A rare French late-nineteenth century giant gorge cased grand-sonnerie carriage clock by Drocourt with subsidiary dials for the seconds, alarm, day and date.
Case
The massive gilt-bronze gorge shaped case has detailed moldings, beveled glasses, and a hinged handle.
Dial
The well-lettered white porcelain dial has Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numbers for the five-minute marks, gilt hands and subsidiary dials for the seconds, alarm, day and date. The whole is framed by an elaborately engraved gilt-bronze mask that depicts scrolling foliage on a chased ground.
Movement
The massive eight-day time, alarm and grand-sonnerie striking movement with a simple calendar that includes day and date has heavy plates, nicely cut wheel work, a large gilt lever platform mounted above, a push button repeat, is stamped and numbered by the maker, ‘Drocourt, 12,411′, is wound and set off the backplate, has a three position lever out the bottom and strikes on two large coiled gongs.
