Description:

The dial is positioned in the upper part and has a concentric retrograde hour section with Roman numerals and a carved, triangular gnomon. It has a wooden underside with a central cartouche depicting the makers initials. The top is engraved with an English ‘Man of War’ amidst rough seas against a landscape that includes a medieval castle.

Very similar Scrimshaw sundials by Thomas Tuttell reside in the Walters Art Museum, the British Museum and the Science Museum.
