James McCabe, # 2748.
|
| Description: |
A good English mid-19th century ormolu eight-day double fusee carriage clock. |
| Case: |
The typical McCabe case has beveled glasses to 4 sides, a folding handle with a reeded center and a lift-out shuttered back door engraved with the needed indications. |
| Dial: |
The silvered, elaborately engraved dial has Roman numerals for the hours, steel-cut hands and is signed ‘Jas. McCabe, London’. |
| Movement: |
The eight-day twin-fusee movement has well-cut wheelwork, a push-button repeat, is wound and set off the backplate, strikes on a large coiled gong and is engraved ‘Jas McCabe, London, 2478’. The balance platform above has an underslung lever escapement with a monometallic balance wheel. |
| Notes: |
The engraving on the dial was most likely done by Thomas Cole who was part of McCabe’s workshop during this period.
The seemingly original travel case has 3 initials on top and a restored purple felt interior. |
