c.1865 Giant English Carriage Clock with an Engraved Dial with Moondial.
Inv. #: E104
Maker:

J.C. Jennens, London.

Case:

The gilt-bronze McCabe style case with reeded handle has beveled glasses to four sides and a removeable rear door with shutter apertures.

Dial:

The silvered dial is decorated with detailed floral engraving, has Roman numerals on a smooth chapter ring, fleur-de-lis steel-cut hands and a moondial aperture with the silvered moon and stars on a dark blue ground.

Movement:

The eight-day twin fusee movement strikes and repeats on a gong, has an engraved border on the backplate, has a giant lever escapement and is stamped on the inner side JC Jennens & Sons.

Notes:

J.C. Jennens & Son was a renowned English clockmaking firm, founded by John Creed Jennens in Birmingham in 1845 before moving to London in 1863.

This feels like a special order since the case is very McCabe and the movement has clear similarities to Jennen’s high quality bracket clocks. This style case was used by makers throughout the late 19th century because of its popularity.

Size: 7 3/4 in case
9 3/4 in handle up.
