c.1868 American Astro-Regulator by George Jones.
Inv. #: g185
Maker:

George Jones

Case:

The gothic style case is made of Brazilian rosewood with spectacular wood grain, excellent proportions, and refined style. The finials are replacements and copied from another George Jones clock with the same case. The case is in good condition with age-appropriate wear.

Dial:

The 18 inch Astro dial has separate chapter rings for the hours, minutes, and seconds. It retains its original silvering and is in excellent condition. The dial is protected by the original glass that is set in a heavy silvered bezel that retains its original putty.

Movement:

The exceptionally high quality movement is typical of George Jones with thick plates, heavy brass well-cut gears, maintaining power, shaped posts and an anchor escapement with jeweled pallets. It is weight driven and the hands are driven independently.

The temperature compensating mercury jars with gilt covers are incorporated into an intricately etched multipiece steel framework with the designs extending the full length of the rod. The pendulum is signed “Geo. A. Jones & Co Courtlandt St: New York” and swings against an engraved silvered beat scale.

Notes:

George Jones was an American clockmaker who started his business at 2 Cortlandt Street in New York in 1863. The George A. Jones Clock Company manufactured walnut parlor and wall clocks and a few large floor standing and wall regulators with fine quality movements. The company was shown in New York City directories at three addresses – No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6 Courtlandt Street from 1864 to 1872.

Size: The clock measures 114 inches tall, 28.5 inches wide, 12.5 inches deep.
