The engraved slivered 24-hour dial has the hours and minutes’ chapters with Arabic numbers, a small up/down 56-hour dial, a second’s dial and is signed ‘H.Hughes &. Sons, Ltd., 59 Fenchurch St, London, 2105 14040’ , has steel-cut hands and is engraved ‘Auxiliary Compensation’ in red. |
Movement: |
The 2-day fusee movement is housed in a gimballed tub, has beautifully spotted plates, maintaining power, a detent escapement with a bimetallic balance with Poole’s auxiliary compensation and a Palladium balance spring. |
Notes: |
Henry Hughes & Sons were at 59 Fenchurch St from 1868-1941, and thereafter became Kelvin Hughes. The chronometer was made by Mercer, hence the fractional number on the dial; 2105 is the Hughes number, 14040 the Mercer movement. It is in untouched unrestored condition. Case key labeled with a Sotheby’s tag.
